Irritable bowel syndrome (ibs)

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) affects 20-30% of the UK population, and can be the cause of bothersome symptoms that can profoundly affect people’s quality of life. Typical symptoms are of irregular bowel habit, with periods of constipation, diarrhoea, or both, associated with abdominal discomfort, bloating, and distension. Often patients have tried diet changes and over the counter medications without success. Fortunately there are many strategies to help patients tackle their symptoms and get control over their IBS.

It is important to exclude other significant conditions that can masquerade as IBS. These can include coeliac disease, gallstones, inflammatory bowel disease, pancreas problems, bowel polyps, and occasionally cancer. The physician will take a careful history, and arrange tests including blood work, scans, stool tests, and endoscopy.

Once other conditions have been ruled out, a physician will focus on dietary, lifestyle, and medication interventions to improve the symptoms of IBS. Dr FitzPatrick has a particular interest in complex nutrition and dietary factors affecting gut conditions. You may be referred to a specialist gastrointestinal dietitian for bespoke advice and follow up.
